GearBox Gallery is proud to present our annual juried exhibition, Within Sight or From Imagination, juried by Jeremy Morgan. The theme opens the door to the possibility of surrealism, dreams, visual investigation, psychological exploration and contemporary commentary. These artists share their visions, explore limitless creativity, and express what is real, imagined, hoped for or somewhere in between.Juror: Jeremy Morgan, a Bay Area icon is best known regionally as an Associate Professor of Painting at San Francisco Art Institute where he taught from 1989-2022 in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. He also taught at John F. Kennedy, Berkeley, CA, (Arts and Consciousness program), California College of Art, Oakland, and as a visiting Professor at China Academy of Art and the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts. Jeremy has also given various workshops in China (CAA Hangzhou, CAA Beijing, Luxan Academy, Shenyang) and is a vision board member with the Lucid Art Foundation in California
It is both a pleasure and somewhat daunting task to be asked to judge and to assist in curating an exhibition. The intention here was to provide a wide range of possibilities for artists to consider, and rather than choosing a specific theme, I decided upon a title that would allow for an array of works and interests in painting, sculpture, photography and beyond. It was very rewarding to have such a strong response to the submission call and I would like to thank TaVee McAllister Lee and GearBox Gallery staff for their support in this process.
What was particularly satisfying was the range and ambition of the work submitted. I was very aware of the level of vulnerability involved in submitting one’s work for selection! To those whose work was not chosen, I apologize that you could not be included. Please do not be disheartened or take it as a slight if you were unsuccessful at this time and please make sure you keep on with your creative acts in the future!!! For those who succeeded, I offer my congratulations and I hope that you enjoy the opportunity to share the work with the public and fellow artists.
As we live in such precarious times; politically, socially, economically all within the reality of climate change, we can hopefully recognize that Art at this moment especially can touch upon multiple levels of awareness by confronting issues or by reassuring or indeed by challenging aspects of our lives and of the world (nature, culture, society and beyond)
I hope that the exhibition will reflect the variety of work submitted and the interests and concerns of the artists. Thank you for your submissions. Please continue with your vision and passion.
