Scenes From A Marriage
GearBox Gallery is pleased to present Days in Our Lives, featuring work by Myra Eastman and Sonia Gill. Eastman’s figurative paintings are driven both by the past and a desire to make sense of the chaos surrounding our world. Her work, grounded in current political and social narratives, strives to contain the often-chaotic action, creating areas of calm and reflection on the picture plane. Gill is fascinated with repetitive shapes, colors, and patterns. Her painted still life compositions of kitchenware are carefully culled from thousands of studies. Using images and text that are deconstructed, her collages eschew the magazines’ printed images to construct a realistic picture that flirts with abstraction.
Myra Eastman is a narrative, mostly figurative painter living in Santa Cruz, California. She is the 2018/19 recipient of the Santa Cruz County Rydell Fellowship. Her solo and group exhibitions include the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, Museo Eduardo Carrillo, and Monterey Peninsula College. She was invited to the Santo Foundation’s 2019 10th Anniversary Invitational Exhibition, and the Painting Center in NYC. Her work is included in the Catamaran Literary Reader, American Art Collector and Studio Visit. Eastman won the Juror’s Award for the GearBox Hierarchy show last year.
Sonia Gill is a Berkeley, California artist who creates visually bold work using oil paint, watercolor, collage, and papier-mâché. Attracted by the intense light and dark shadows of the northern California mornings Gill takes the mundane to the marvelous, painting still lifes of her collection of vintage dishes. She is a recipient of the 2022 Sebastopol Center for the Arts Award of Merit. Her recent solo and group shows include the Artifact Gallery, NYC, Denise Bibro Fine Art, NYC, the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, Novato, CA and the Museum of Northern California Art, Chico, CA. Gill was juried into American Art Collector and Studio Visit Magazine and is a member artist at GearBox Gallery.
