Palingenesis (or palingenesia) is a concept of rebirth or re-creation, used in various contexts in philosophy, theology, politics, and biology. Darrell Hunger and David Fitzgerald present works that address the concept of rebirth or re-creation on the 25th Anniversary of the Oakland and Berkley hills fires.
For Darrell Hunger this exhibit represents a very personal journey of creative regeneration. On October 20, 1991, a firestorm swept through the Oakland and Berkeley hills, destroying 3,000 homes, including Darrell Hunger’s house and studio. Most of the sculpture shown in Palingenesis was created from elements of sculptures, houses and car parts that had been transformed in the fire
David Fitzgerald’s large scale dramatic paintings emerge as if from another universe, arising out of some unknown and strange beauty. Fitzgerald creates this sense of grand space in uncharted worlds without direct reference to anything except the rhythm, flow, harmony and mystery that are the essence of the painting itself.
