GearBox Gallery presents The Kids Are Alright, featuring work by Sandra Wong Orloff and Daniel Stingle. Wong Orloff’s figurative drawings are highlighted with bright lines of color that are reflective of the times and the world. Wong Orloff draws images of young people as they navigate coming of age in a pandemic. Other drawings taken from news events ask us to reconsider whether the kids are alright. Stingle finds and creates objects; assembling them in fragile constructs to represent human infrastructure and its collision with nature. Calling attention to objects that are linked to natural resource consumption and environmental degradation, Stingle aims to engage the audience by using the formal principles of ceramic art mixed with humor.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Sandra Wong Orloff
Sandra Wong Orloff was born in the 60s, grew up under the influence of the 70s, but is really a product of the 80s. During the 90s, Wong Orloff discovered drawing was her preferred method for expressing her ideas. She then spent much of the double aughts working on Luggage, a graphic novel and more recently, she is working on a series of figures drawn in ink and graphite set in abstract watercolor landscapes. Wong Orloff earned a BFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA in Fine Arts from Mills College. She was included in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts first Bay Area Now and awarded an Artist-In-Residence Grant from the San Francisco Arts Council. She was a founding member with Gina Gaiser of the artist collective Ben Dunne Presents, producing pop-up art exhibitions and events. She has exhibited her artwork in venues around the country, and the Bay Area including a 2 person show in May 2021 at Manna Gallery in Oakland. Wong Orloff is a member of GearBox Gallery.
Daniel Stingle
Daniel Stingle was born and raised with his four brothers and parents in northern Minnesota before his move to San Francisco in the 90s. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular and Genetic Biology from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics/ Sculpture from San Francisco State University. Dan has taught ceramics at junior colleges and at community art centers, and museums throughout Northern California. He was also a sculpture instructor at San Francisco State University and in 2011, Stingle was awarded an SFSU artist residency in Seoul, South Korea. He has been honored with several Public Art Commissions including two in Yosemite National Park and the David Packard Memorial Sculpture in Monterey, California. His bronze sculpture, designed and installed for the Golden Gate National Parks Association, can be viewed at Crissy Field in San Francisco. He is currently a ceramics teacher and art department head at Abraham Lincoln High School in San Francisco.
