Access: Angela Baker

January 14 – February 13, 2016
FIRST FRIDAY RECEPTION:   February 5th from 6-9 pm

A native of Philadelphia, Angela Baker received her art education in Lawrence, Kansas and Columbus, OH, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Columbus College of Art and Design in 1993. In the Key Mandala series Baker takes an everyday object that may rarely be observed closely and transforms it into something that might be considered through the use of pattern, repetition and color. Based on keys to actual places, the key series also plays on the traditional role of mandalas, which were considered abstract representations of places that Buddhist practitioners could enter.

Baker was nominated for a SECA (Society for the Encouragement of Contemporary Art) Award in 2012. Her work has been exhibited in both group and solo shows in the U.S. and Hungary at the Alpan Gallery in New York, the George Lawson Gallery in San Francisco and Los Angeles as well as the Vizivarosi Gallery in Budapest, Hungary.

And in the Inner Room at GearBox, a little bit of Oakland Art History with UNLOCK YOUR MIND, work by Ken Gulley & memorabilia of the Upstairs Art Association.

Also showing at the GearBox Gallery are works by member artists and just upstairs at Transmission, Erik Parra through Januray 23rd.

The GearBox is open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 to 6 pm and Saturdays from 11 am to 5 pm
